Kids Corner August 2010

Hi and how are you doing this summer? Karen and I hope you are enjoying the warm summer days…at least the few we have had so far! We are sure there are more to come and hope you get out there and really have a good time in beautiful San Diego…or wherever you may go this summer. When you are here and you want something interesting to do, we hope you can join us at Harris House. Here are the activities, dates and times August! God Bless You! C & K

Vacation Bible School – Comparable Parables – Sunday August 8-29, 9:30 – 11:30 am at Harris House – (the flyer lists the start time as 10, but if you and your parents want to come at 9:30, they can go to Adult Education before church and you can come down to Harris House and have some fun before VBS (l ;

KFC – There is no KFC in August as we are already going to have lots of action on Sunday morning at VBS, but instead we are having the music night every Thursday from 6-8 pm. Come and join Bryce, Shelley, Clark & Karen who are the foundation of the group we now call “The Called.” David Brauner and Aliya also come from time to time and one of David’s songs entitled “The Call” was our inspiration for the group name. We sing several of David’s original songs, many songs from Awakening and a couple songs written by two other group members as well as a few secular songs that have a positive meaning. We are still looking for keyboards, guitar (to replace Clark) and other instruments that will fit into our group. We are excited to have Sarah and Norah joining us at KFC and hope they can also join us for music night when they have time. Sarah and Norah both play the ocarina very well, and they are also learning to play the piano. We are also hoping to have Mia and Laurin join us after the play is over and they have some free time.

Boomers Night – We are planning to meet up at Boomers on August 27th for a night of fun together. If you would like to come, please let us know so we can arrange for a group discount. Please check your calendars and if you would like to come, shoot us an email and we will put you on the list. If you need transportation, be sure to let us know in advance so we can get you there. We are thinking about meeting at 6:30 at Boomers in Clairemont and staying until closing at 9. We will check on the closing time and prices and let you know later in the month.

Okay, that should do it for now. Have a safe and enjoyable summer…and beyond!

Take care! Clark & Karen

Ministering

Frederick Buechner in his book Wishful Thinking writes that “the Gospels depict Jesus as having spent a surprising amount of time healing people.  Ever since the time of Jesus, healing has been part of the Christian tradition.  In this century it has usually been associated with religious quackery or the lunatic fringe, but as the psychosomatic dimension of disease has come to be taken more and more seriously by medical science it has regained some of its former respectability.”

More on Ministering

Henri J.M. Nouwen in his book The Wounded Healer speaks of those who minister to others as needing to recognize the sufferings of our own time in our own hearts and “make that recognition the starting point” of our service.

In Matthew’s Gospel (4:23-24), it is reported that “Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and curing every disease and every sickness among the people.  So his fame spread throughout all Syria, and they brought to him all the sick, those who were afflicted with various diseases and pains, demoniacs, epileptics, and paralytics, and he cured them."
