9/19/10 Pastor's Forum

On September 19, the Rev. Rachel Anderson will join us to discuss the work of Presbyterian Border Ministries and Pueblos Hermanos in Tijuana. This work, on both sides of the border, engages churches in issues of immigration, poverty, health, and women’s rights and safety and supplements the work of Baja Presbyterian Ministry. Rachel’s mission began in April and she is anxious to share the good news of the impact Presbyterians can have in building bridges of shalom with Christian brothers and sisters in Mexico. Please mark your calendars to hear this dedicated and charismatic partner in mission.

World Communion and Peacemaking Offering

Give to the Peacemaking Offering

This Year’s Offering Theme and Art

The theme for 2009 is taken from Psalm 85:10, “Justice and peace shall kiss each other.”

The art is a serigraph by John August Swanson titled PSALM 85. Learn more about about Mr. Swanson.

The Peacemaking Offering was created in 1980 to support the efforts of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) to live out a deeper commitment to peacemaking as part of our faithfulness to God. It is one of four special offerings designated by the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)’s General Assembly.

Most churches receive the Offering on World Communion Sunday, the first Sunday in October, which this year is October 4. We encourage churches to use whatever Sunday works best for them.

Each congregation is encouraged to retain 25 percent of the Offering it receives to use for local ministries of peacemaking within the church and its community. Twenty-five percent is used by presbyteries and synods, and 50 percent is used by the General Assembly ministries through the Presbyterian Peacemaking Program.

In accordance with the action of the 217th General Assembly, we encourage congregations to consider directing a portion or all of their 25 percent of the Peacemaking Offering as a faithful Christian response to the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

July 14              Presidio Brass

July 21              2nd Avenue Klezmer Band

July 28              Billy Hawkins Dixieland Band

Aug 4                Invitation to Dance, Featuring Trombonist, Kevin Esposito

This will be a very interesting and entertaining series.  Presidio has opened the series for the last two years and will be bringing media for purchase.  They are the newest up and coming brass ensemble in San Diego and have performed to considerable acclaim.  The 2nd Avenue Klezmer Band is an old favorite and will bring a warm, embracing Yiddish flavor to the series.  And, last, but by far, not least, will be our annual Invitation to Dance concert.  This year I have asked Kevin Esposito to put together an ensemble to encourage our audience to dance away the dusk.  Kevin is a very accomplished jazz trombonist and he is sure to wow us with he prowess on his horn.Brian Baynes and Jeff Pekarek
