Peace and Justice

Next Meeting

There will be a meeting of the Peace and Justice Committee after worship on July 12th.

All are welcome; please bring some light food to share for lunch.

We attended the Interfaith Alliance Saturday Panel Discussion and Dinner and was inspired by the sharing and commonalities between the religions represented. Some thoughts from the meetings, some seemingly simple ideas to ponder and to incorporate into life:

  • The further we are from God, the further we are from each other.
  • Communicate with and learn about diverse people and find good in another point of view
  • Labels bring about divisions

February Forums

Two Forums in February designed to deepen our understanding and commitment to Peace and Justice.

On February 8, Karen and Tony will share their experiences on their recent trip to the Middle East.

On February 22, Sunday, 11:15 AM after church, all are welcome to this lively PowerPoint presentation on Islam: a Religion of Peace? by Dr. Saleem Ahmed, also author of Beyond Veil and Holy War: Islamic Teachings and Muslim Practices with Biblical Comparisons. He describes the “mixed signals” in the sacred text of the Qur’an (Koran) then clarifies the context in which the Qur’an’s “war and peace” signals were revealed to Muhammad; discusses psyche of Muslims following these diverging paths; and suggests a way for global peace, also based on the Qur’an.
Dr. Ahmed, a founding member of the All-Believer’s Network, was born in India, educated and worked in both Pakistan and Hawaii, is multi-cultural, (soil scientist, financial consultant), and has worked for universities, related organizations, and multinational corporations.  Saleem is a best selling author with Simon & Schuster.

Peace Making Conference

Another way committee members are pursuing peacemaking is attending the National Peacemaking Conference.  In Orange CA, at Chapman University, July 15-19, 2008, people interested in social justice will be gathering together.  This peace making conference is partially possible through our Peacemaking Offerings shared every October.  Westminster members attending are:  Joanne Thompson, Sue Randerson, and Victoria Lea joined by a Christ United Presbyterian member.

Peace Banner

This Peacemaking banner was designed and constructed by Deborah Hammond who adapted it from an original stain glass window in Westminster designed by Donna Kindig. Deb constructed this banner with the aid of Joanne Thompson, who sent it to June 2008 General Assembly in San Jose, CA. Ardith Gestra, master seamstress, sewed the final product. These women dedicate it to the fostering of Peace in the Westminster Presbyterian community.
