Wisdom's Delight
There are five Sundays in May, all of them distinct. We welcome to our pulpit on May 2 the Rev. George Herbert from the Presbyterian Foundation. Not only will he be preaching in worship, but afterward he will conduct a workshop on planned giving, something we can all benefit from as we look at possible ways to support the reconciling ministry of Christ perpetually. While giving brings joy, perpetual giving brings the possibility of ecstasy. Come and find out how.
The second Sunday of the month is Mother’s Day, a time to draw upon the rich treasury of stories about the role of mothers in the Scriptures, and to celebrate our own mothers and the gifts they have bequeathed us throughout our lives.
On May 16, we will formally recognize and celebrate the emeritus status of former pastor Mikel Taxer and will hang his portrait in the church hallway to honor his 42 years of ministry in this congregation. Please lend your presence to this delightful occasion.
Pentecost follows, and the Pentecost Offering which supports child advocacy programs, youth ministry throughout our denomination, and the PC(USA) Young Adult Volunteer program. Look for more information about these creative ministries in the bulletin inserts which will be provided in the prior Sundays, and bring a generous heart.
The fifth Sunday is Trinity Sunday and a time to recall and revel in our Presbyterian heritage. One of the lectionary readings for the day is taken from Proverbs 8 and celebrates Wisdom as a companion with God in creation:
I was beside him, like a master worker; and I was daily his delight, rejoicing before him always, rejoicing in his inhabited world and delighting in the human race. (vss. 30-31)
During these days of May, may we delight in God as much as the Scriptures portray God delighting in us!
